What is acne? Acne is a skin disease characterized by areas of scaly red skin. The area affected will show signs of blackheads, whiteheads, pinheads, pimples, nodules and scarring. Acne affects the part of the skin with the densest population of sebaceous follicles which include the face, the chest and the back. Acne occurs as a result of blockages in follicles. Hyperkeratinization and formation of a plug of keratin and sebum is the earliest change. Enlargement of sebaceous glands and an increase in sebum production occur with increased androgen  production at adrenarche. The microcomedo may enlarge to form an open blackhead or closed comedone.
